Jade monster face with human features, fangs, headdress and earrings - Translucent white jade, with traces of cinnabar on surface, grey skin and erosion.
- Oval in cross section with massive earrings and ears.
- Pierced longitudinally suggesting use as a pendant; does not stand well due to curved base.
- Carving is a mixture of raised features and incised lines.
- On back of head carving is in low relief and beautifully executed.
- Eyes are rendered in typical Shang style, as are the hook and curl motifs on the back; mien is fierce.
- Notice how the ears and earrings have been cleverly 'folded back' to conserve the use of jade by not having them project too much.
-  Most likely monster carving
- 5.9 x 5.3 x 2.8cm
Jessica Rawson in Chinese Jades, 1995, pp. 199-201, discusses similarly styled neolithic monster faces. She says they are at once "compelling" and an "enigma". These two pendants certainly fit that description.                            |
