Female Bear with Turned Head

Posed female bear, standing, with turned head
  • White translucent jade with some opaque areas, spots of calcification and surface erosion.
  • Angular hook and incised square decoration on arm and legs of bear.
  • Decoration is in relief and outlined on each side - nicely done, but hard to photograph.
  • Bear has layer of fat on belly, and a short tail at the rear.
  • The mouth is slightly open but not threatening.
  • The pose is decidedly coquettish and feminine - I can almost see the mirror on the wall.
  • 8.9 x 4.6 x 3.2cm
The Brundage jades in the Asian Art Museum (San Francisco) have a similarly posed female standing bear that is pictured in
Chinese Jades in the Avery Brundage Collection, d'Argence, 1977, pp. 50-51.
