Plaque w/ birds and human

Flat plaque with 3 birds and human head in white jade.
Yang, Boda in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji , 2005, vol. I, p. 183 identifies a similar jade
  • Birds are shown in profile with delineated wings and tail.
  • Largest bird grasps top of the human head in its talons.
  • Jade has a white skin and small surface rust all over.
  • Very fine thread relief includes decorative flourishes as well as naturalistic elements.
  • Carving is pierced at several points to set the design elements apart.
  • 7.9 x 4.3 x .4 cm
The long, "S" shaped swoop theat rises from the wing of the large bird and ends over its head is rather interesting. At first glance it appears to be part of the tail of the mid-sized bird, but that can't really be so, as the bird stands on it. Is it just a decorative element that ties the two parts together?

Overall, the design is very carefully worked out with large and small elements harmoniously arranged to balance the composition. The sense of it, though,  is utter mystery.
