Phoenix with long tail and crown in white jade  - Beautifully prepared carving in translucent jade.
- Traces of light pitting and calcification in the crevices.
- Shape is similar to the famous Fuhao phoenix found in 1976 in a royal Shang tomb.
- This style became a popular subject for jade carving in many periods of Chinese history; the present carving is a worthy example of that tradition.
- Phoenix is the common western translation of Fenghuang, although the connotations differ in many ways.
- The relief is beautifully executed:
double slanting incised lines highlight the relief which is actually raised above the surrounding ground. - 9 cm x 1.9 x .48 cm
