Blade 11

Massive reaping style blade with 7 holes

  • Opaque green jade with various colors of suffusion and calcification; much pitting has been removed, but fissures are evident; jade is fibrous in places (conversion to actinolite).
  • Flat surface of blade is smooth but has gentle ripples (from cutting).
  • This piece has been extensively prepared (cleaned) but surface damage is visible close up.
  • Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade: Fron the Neolithc to the Qing, pp. 184 -185, describes similar "ceremonial blades in the shape of reaping knives". This piece seems to fit into this tradition.
  • 50.1 x 8.45 x 1.1 cm - 1.06 kg.
