Boy with Lotus

  • Light green translucent jade with oily, reddish residue on surface; calcification crevices
  • Small hole above hands for suspension
  • Some sort of a charm for the blessing of a male heir
  • Likely Ming/Qing
  • See James Watt, Chinese Jades from Han to Ch'ing,pp 110-111, for interesting history of this type of carving - it derives from the festival celebrating the once a year meeting of the Cowherd and Weaving Maid, which enjoyed considerable popularity from Sung times on; the association with the festival seems to have been lost by Qing era, but the figure of boy and lotus (in varied combinations and poses) remained popular
  • 6.5 x 3.5 x 2 cm
