Dragon Complex 9

Curved dragon plaque with tail

  • Translucent green jade with pickled skin and spots of suffusion.
  • Body of dragon is filled with grain pattern relief and spirals. The 'grains' are laid out in a regular grid.
  • Long body is bordered by a beveled lip; tail has fine incised lines.
  •  Warring States in style.
  •  13.71 x 1.89 x .53 cm.
Truth to tell, there is not much of a 'complex' to this carving - its simply a long sinuous fish or snake like creature with a dragon head. There is an old story that dragons start out as fish, specifically carp.
If they are really ambitious and and persevere, the carp will succeed in swimming upstream past the 'dragon's gate' (falls) where they can transform into dragons.
