Two jade plaques decorated with monster face and griffins - Opaque dark green jade with black suffusion and much surface damage; light green jade with calcification.
- Both pieces are in low relief created by slanting incised lines.
- The animal design elements hardly emerge from the background. The light green jade is particularly hard to read - it helps to look at the almost black piece first.
- Rawson, Chinese Jade, 1995, p. 66, pictures a similar jade plaque whose design she feels is related to bronzes from the Eastern Zhou period.
- 9.5 x 9.5 x .65 cm; 13.77 x 13.36 x 1.18 cm.
