Shang or Western Zhou plaque with semi-human and crest. - White, translucent jade with raised thread relief.
- Moderate calcification and encrustation evident.
- Carving is slightly oval in cross section
- In fetal-position pose with clawed hands and crest.
- Mysterious circle with inscribed cross on buttocks-appears on other similar jades; v. Rawson, Chinese Jades, fig. 2, p. 219
- Pose is similar to Shang bird with crest.
- E. Childs-Johnson describes this pose as one of transformation and/or rebirth; feel free to make of it what  you can; I favor her reading.
